The two major sources for freshwater are:

Ground water - water found in shallow aquifers beneath the earth's surface. This water is generally found at depths up to around 2,000 feet deep. Below that depth, water becomes too salty to drink.Surface water - Water found in streams, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs and as the previous respondent suggested glaciers.

Other sources include sea water that has been processed through desalinization plants. Small amounts for personal use are derived from capturing phreatic (rain) water.
