what is the maximum length of a pencil that can be kept in a rectangular box of dimensions 12cmx9cmx8cm is

Diagonal - √ (8² + 6² + 2²) = 10.198 cm. 
However the one end of the pencil is sharp and the other end is hexagonal. The width of the normal pencil is approx 6 mm 
Therefore it would make a triangle at the end. The length of the vertical would be = 3.3 mm 
Therefore maximum length of the pencil can be kept in the box would be - 9.866 cm 
 
Its derived from below - 
√ (8² + 6² + 2²) = √104 = √(4 x 26) = 2√26
