People lie for various reasons, some with good intentions and others not. Lies with bad intentions are: rumours or example such as telling your mother that you did not break something. This can make others upset.

Say if your friend heard a bad rumour about you and lies to you so that you won't feel self concious. The friend will lie so that you feel happy and won't have to face the truth.
