The pink ears in the chapter signify the ears of the headmaster of Swami’s school. The headmaster was angry at the students because most of them had not turned up in class the previous day.
He punished the students who were absent, to stand in the desk. Swami was one among them. The headmaster then questioned each one of them about their reasons.
He was angry with the reasons and asked for medical certificate from those who gave the reason as headache.
Swami, standing on the last desk, felt the headmaster’s ears pink. He was afraid to speak to him.
