The process in which molecular species are accumulated at the surface but not reach in the bulk of a solid or liquid is called adsorption.

The molecular species which accumulate at the surface is known as adsorbate.

The material on the surface of which the adsorbate accumulate or adsorption take place is called adsorbent.
