This scene reveals the real entity of Prospero other than what his daughter Miranda thought. Miranda is touched and anguished at being a witness to the scene where a ship is caught in a tempest. She is touched and grieved and exclaims that if she had the power she would sink the sea within the Earth because of which people on board were caught in distraught. Here, Prospero asks Miranda to calm down assuring her that no person on board would be harmed at the storm. Here, he asks Miranda to lend him her ears and pay heed to what he was about to say. Then, he enquires her as to whether she remembers a time when they had arrived in that island. To that, she replies in negation. Here, Prospero says that her father was the Duke of Milan and her mother was a woman of virtues. Miranda here doubts on Prospero being her real father. Prospero here reveals to be her real father as well as the banished Duke of Milan. He talks about how his library of books on magic was his kingdom and he paid very less attention to the happenings in his kingdom. This chance was grasped by his brother to plot against him. He was thrown away of the kingdom of which he was the rightful owner by his treacherous brother Antonio and the King of Naples. It was a matter of luck because of which they survived. They were sent on a boat by a very nobleman Gonzalo who put in fresh water, rich garments, linens, stuffs and necessaries for their well being. Now, after so many years, Prospero had got a chance to take his revenge as his enemies were on board the ship that was caught in the artificial tempest created by Prospero.
