it means when you don't have a direct flight between the destination you are at and the destination you want to go.
for example if you are at Mumbai and wanted to got laddakh, then there is no direct flight between Mumbai and Laddakh. you will have to travel to Delhi and then board a "connecting flight" to Laddakh from Delhi
