The name Draupadi means firm footed. In Mahabharat, she was the epic heroine, the daughter of King Drupad and his queen Kokila Devi and considered as one of the panchkanyas. Being the Princess of Panchal, she was known as Panchali. She was born from fire along with her elder brother Drishtadyumn when her father wished to obtain a son who would Kill Sage Drona. When she emerged from the fire, a heavenly voice said that she would bring about a big change in the future of dharma of Bharat varsha.Draupadi is described to be the most beautiful woman of Dvapada Yuga with dark complexion, lotus eyes, beautiful convex nails, dark curly hair and an enchanting fragnance like that of a blue lotus.

In her swayamvara, Arjun, a Pandava, won her hand in marriage. However, she became the common wife of the Pandavas because of her mother-in-law Pritha's misunderstanding. After facing problems created by her polyandry, she became the empress of Indraprastha. She had five sons, one from each Pandava, who were collectively addressed as the Upapandavas.

After Yudhishthir, the emperor of Indraprastha, performed the Rajasuya Yajna, he was invited to play a game of dice in Hastinapura. When he lost Draupadi in the game, she was humiliated by the Kauravas, Shakuni and Karn. When Dushasan tried to disrobe her, Krishna saved her. Later she was given an exile for 13 years along with her husbands.

When she was spending the exile in forest, Jayadrath tried to abduct her. For Ajñātavās (incognito), she stayed in Matsya Kingdom and became a maid of the queen, Sudeshna. Kichak, the general of the kingdom, tried to molest her, but was killed by Bhima. After the Kurukshetra War, the revenge for her humiliation was taken, but she lost her father, brothers and her five children.
