Gross deformity means severe distortion or malformation of a part of the body.

1. It is mainly due to abnormal development of a body part.

  • Researchers believe most of them occur early during fetal development.
  • The probable reasons can be genetic mutation, damage to the fetus or uterus, complications at birth, a hormone disorder , etc.
  • For example, Sprengel Deformity (elevated shoulder blade (scapula) on one side of the body)

2. The other possible reasons for such abnormalities during a person's lifetime can be

  • a severe burn injury
  • a reconstructive surgery following any critical injury  that didn't work well.
  • Improper healing of fractured bones
  • Diseases like leprosy, arthritis, rheumatoid disorders, malignancies, etc.

The deformities can affect the body in various ways affecting the patient’s daily life, like restricting the movement of one or more parts of the body, in addition to affecting his/her confidence.

  • Gross deformation is most common due to congenital anomalies.
  • Such is caused either by ediopathic reasons or malnutrition of the mother during pregnancy.
