By the middle of the twelfth century, the Ghorids who were the
vassals of Ghazni became powerful enough to challenge the
successors of Sultan Mahmud ruling in Ghazni. Ghiyasuddin Ghori,
the founder, conquered Ghazni and annexed it to Ghor. In 1173
CE, Ghiyasuddin made his brother, Shahabuddin Muhammad
(also known as Muizzuddin Muhammad bin Sam), the incharge of
Ghazni while he was ruling at Ghor.
