Muscat: The Muscat Municipality will embark on a project to replace the existing incandescent lamps on the roads by energy-efficient LED lights in Muscat Governorate.
The project which will begin in the first quarter of 2018 aims at rationalizing electricity consumption, conserving energy, and realizing the goals of sustainable development. The project has an operation period of 20 years with 10-year warrantee.
Engineer Zeyad bin Abdulmajeed al Zedjali, director of lightening at Muscat Municipality said the project would provide many advantages. Most importantly, the project will save 60 per cent of energy consumption through the use of smart lighting technology, contribute to reducing carbon emission by cutting electricity consumption and reducing operation and maintenance cost.
The Muscat Municipality has conducted a feasibility study for the project and tested LED lights on one of the streets in Muscat to weigh the pros and cons of the projects. Within the same context, the Directorate-General of Projects at Muscat Municipality held a meeting with the supply companies during which the municipality reviewed its plans to develop the road lighting system.
