When India became independent then there were two supreme powers i.e., USA and USSR( Union Soverign Soviet Republic). India tried to be friendly with both countries but refused to be dictated by any of them. This polic came to be known as Non- alignment movemennt.

  • Sukarno ( Indonesia )
  • Gamal Abdel Nasser ( Egypt )
  • Joseph Broze Tito ( Yugoslavia )

Non - aligned movement is the policy of a sovereign state according to which  it does not align itself with any of the power blocs and at the same time actively participates in international cooperation , harmony etc.

The aims or objectives of NAM are as follows :

  • To eliminate all causes which could directly or indirectly lead to war .
  • To build NIEO ( New International Economic Order .
  • To protect human rights.
  • To promote scientific culture .
  • To preserver culture and traditions.
  • To strengthen world peace.
  • To strengthen U.N .
  • To discourage rearmament.

NAM had these features :

  • It was opposed to any military alliance .
  • It opposed racialism .
  • It meant active participation rather passiveness.
  • It promoted international peace .
