RETENTION
Retention refers to the process where the configuration of the molecule is retained after the reaction. Thus the product molecule has the same configuration as the reactant molecule.
INVERSION
Inversion refers to the process where the configuration of the molecules is reversed during the course of the reaction. Thus, the product is of the opposite enantiomeric form as compared to the reactant.
