Karaikal was known as a maritime trading city in Chola Nadu. Ammaiyar, where original name was Punitavati, and was born to Dhanadattan in a merchant community which is known as Nattukottai Nagarathar (also known as Nattukottai Chettiar). She was married to Paramadattan, who was a wealthy merchant from Nagapattinam. Karaikal was also known as The Candle of Ocean. There was a famouse trader who was AgappattiNam, who had a son called parama dhaththan, and the Weeding was fixed and it happened in a good manner.
