Oxidation is defined as a process in which an electron is removed from a molecule during a chemical reaction. During oxidation, there is a transfer of electrons. In other words, during oxidation, there is a loss of electrons.

  • Oxidation can be defined on the basis of 3 scientific terms. These are as follows :-
  • The reaction which involves addition of oxygen in any atom is called oxidation.
  • Removal of hydrogen from any compound is also included under oxidation Reactions.
  • Losing of electrons from electropositive elements is regarded as oxidation of the element.

\maltese \:  \large \underbrace { \pmb{ \orange{\frak{Oxidizing\:agents : -  }}}}

  • The compounds which lose their oxygen atom for the purpose of oxidizing another element are called as oxidizing agents
  • You can learn them by a short trick which is stated as under:-
  • The compound which goes under reduction are called oxidizing agents and vice versa.

\maltese \:  \large \underbrace { \pmb{ \orange{\frak{Reduction : -  }}}}

  • The reaction which involves removal of oxygen from any compound is called reduction.
  • Addition of hydrogen to any atom is also included under reduction.
  • Gaining of electron by an electronegative element is called reduction.

\maltese \:  \large \underbrace { \pmb{ \orange{\frak{Reducing\:agents : -  }}}}

  • The atoms which gain oxygen from the oxidizing agents are called reducing agents
  • As they go under oxidation they are stated as reducing agents
