The word 'Tal' means lake or pond in English.

The word 'Naini' is derived from the Naini lake which is situated in Nainital.

It is also believed according to mythology that when body of Parvati was carried by Lord Shiva the part where Parvati's eyes i.e. nain fell was named Naini-tal.
