“I stretch… the good news”

The lines are from “The Telephone” poem, jotted down by Edward Field. This poem was added in the book called “Counting Myself Lucky: Selected Poems” in 1963-1992. In this poem, the telephone has been described as a medium through which people send their love and warmth to one another from different placed. The basic theme of this poem revolves around happiness and self-identity. Through the above lines, the poet has said that in every morning he stretches himself up and waits for a call to answer because it brings him joy, good news and definitely, the voice of a person. It enunciates that a single telephone gives him pleasure that he transforms from an isolated person to a social person whenever a call comes. The concept of sharing feeling through an object permits him to listen to a human voice alongside an auspicious news from friends and family.
