as we know ideal gas equation that

PV=nRT

this equation is based on some hypothesis that

there are no forces of attraction b/w gaseous molecules (not true)
the volume of gas negligible in comparison to the volume of the container (not true)

so Vander wall gave his this modification of ideal gas equation

P(na^2/v^2)(V-nb) = nRT


where a and b are Vander wall constant

b is for volume occupied by the gas
