What is the meaning of this sentence one tree is fifth from either end of the row.

Explanation:

It means that there are some number of trees arranged in a row. If you count starting from the left end, that particular tree is fifth. The same tree is also fifth if you count from the right end.

This can happen if there are NINE trees :-)
