Answer:

MECHANISM OF CURRENT FLOW IN METALLIC CONDUCTORS. Flow of current in metals is due to flow of free electrons. In the absence of any externally applied emf (by means of a battery), the free electrons move randomly through the metal from one point to another giving zero net current.

The mechanism of current flow through a metallic wire is:

  • When metal is attached to a battery, the free ions are emitted and gain motion and power application of an electric field (created by the battery). The transit is not smooth, however, and the electrons smash with the lattice ion, which is the final gainer (of energy).
  • Because we know that a body's temperature is proportional to the energy of these ions' vibrations, these collisions cause the metal's temperature to rise. The free electron is primarily to blame.
