The fusion of sperm and secondary oocyte sets off an increase on membrane potential of secondary oocyte. This transient potential change is called fast block polyspermy. Which is followed by the phagocytosis of sperm by ovum.
Basically it is a measure taken to allow fertilisation by only one sperm.
