keep the given numbers in assinding or desiending order

2,3,4,4,6,9

take the middle terms i.e 4,4

now add them 4+4 and divide by 2

4+4/2

8/2

4

The median of the numbers 4, 9, 6, 3, 4, and 2  is  4.

Given: The numbers 4, 9, 6, 3, 4, 2.

To Find: The median of the numbers 4, 9, 6, 3, 4, 2.

Solution:

The median is the middlemost value of an arranged data set.

The method for finding the median of the numbers is listed below.

  1. Arrange the data set in either ascending or descending order.
  2. Count the number of elements in the data set ( say N ).
  3. If the number of elements is odd, then the median is the ( N + 1 )/2 th value in the data set.
  4. If the number of elements is even, then the median is equal to the average of the two middlemost numbers given by;

      Median = [( N / 2 )th value + (( N / 2 ) + 1 )th value] / 2                .....(i)

Coming to the numerical, we are given;

The number: 4, 9, 6, 3, 4, 2

Arranging the numbers in ascending order, we get;

                        2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 9

We can see that there are N = 6 numbers in the set, so it is an even number.

The median for an even number set can be found from point (4) by putting the values in (i);

The median = [( N / 2 )th value + (( N / 2 ) + 1 )th value] / 2

                    = [( 6 / 2 )th value + (( 6 / 2 ) + 1 )th value] / 2

                    = [ 3rd value + 4th value] / 2

                    = ( 4 + 4 ) / 2

                    = 4

Hence, the median of the numbers 4, 9, 6, 3, 4, and 2  is  4.
