The matter through which a mechanical wave travels is called the medium. There are three types of mechanical waves: transverse, longitudinal, and surface waves. They differ in how particles of the medium move when the energy of the wavepasses through.

A wave moving in a gas must be longitudinal and not transverse because longitudinal sound waves can travel through a gas whereas transverse sound waves can only travel through solids and surfaces of liquids but not through gas or air.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU :-)
