The smallest unit of memory is called bit. Binary symbol 0 or 1 represents the bit.

In fact they are discrete voltage signals formed by the conducting and the non conducting state of the electronic circuit. A voltage of 0.5V indicates 0 while a signal of 1v represents the binary 1.
