It is about the decision making process that happens in every one's life. In England and USA in those times joining the war was a big question and dilemma. His friend Edward Thomas a poet was married and was wondering whether to join army or not.
The message conveyed is that one could choose the less chosen career which is perhaps a little uncertain and could be fatal. But once he returns from that path, he would be a war hero. He could tell the stories of his heroic choice and performances to his children and friends.
Message is that select the one which makes you proud, distinguished, fame and allows you to show bravery and intelligence. That gives a chance for you to be remembered. Thomas and many others joined the war after reading the poem.
