Steps to balance a chemical equation:
1)Write the word equation of a chemical reaction.
eg.: Ferrous+Water=Ferrous oxide+Hydrogen
2)Replace each compound or element by its chemical formulae.
eg.: Fe+H2O=Fe3O4+H2
3)List the number of atoms of each element present in the unbalanced equation.
eg. ( BROWN TABLE IN TEXTBOOK ON PAGE NUMBER 4)
4)Start balancing with the compound that contains the maximum number of atoms. In the above table Oxygen has maximum number of atoms on the products side. ∴To balance O2 atoms.
(GREEN TABLE ON PAGE NO. 4)
While balancing the equation the formulae of the compounds or elements cannot be altered.
5)If still the chemical equation is unbalanced repeat the steps 3 to 4 with the unbalanced elements or compounds till you get a balanced equation.
Fe+4H2O=Fe3O4+H2 [partly balanced]
(PINK TABLE ON PAGE NO. 4)
Now the equation is :
Fe+4H2O=Fe3O4+4H2[partly balanced]
(BLUE TABLE ON PAGE NO. 5)
6)Finally check the correctness of the balanced equation ,we count atoms of each element on both the sides of the equation.
3Fe+4H2O=Fe3O4=4H2O[balanced equation]
the number of atoms of elements on both sides of the equation are equal. ∴It is a balanced chemical equation. This method of balancing a chemical equation is called hit and trial method.
