Midday Meal Programme is a school meal scheme which provides free lunch to children in government schools. It was launched by the Government of India in 1995, with twin objectives--increasing enrollment and attendance and improve nutritional standard of school going children.

The three benefits of the scheme are :

1.  It increased enrollment and attendance.

2.  It improved the nutritional standards of school going children.

3.  It also provided employment to women as well.

The Programme might help to promote greater equality as it may improve socialization among children belonging to all castes and religions. When they eat together and in same plates from the childhood, the caste differences and discrimination would naturally end. Besides the programme enables lower castes and poor people to educate their children and provides them opportunity to express their potential. It would also help to promote greater equality.
