Gram molecular weight(GMW) or the molecular mass is calculated by adding the atomic mass of  each element of the given compound.

I ll give you an example to understand this better:

Eg :  Find molecular mass of CaCl2. (calcium chloride)

        [ Atomic mass of Ca= 40 and Cl= 35.5]

   sol:  CaCl2

         = 40 + (2 x 35.5)       [don't forget to add them and not multiply] [ 2 is written in this step because there are two atoms of chlorine] [similarly, if there is only one atom of chlorine we should not multiply with 2]

        =  40 + 71

        =  111 g (in grams)

Therefore, to find molecular formula of CuO

    CuO   [atomic mass of Cu= 64 and atomic mass of oxygen= 16]
