The story ‘A piece of bread’ was written by Francois Coppee. The story is actually based on the influence of the Franco-Prussian War in 1887.

The moral of the story is that “Humanity develops when you meet more men and when you experience more adventures”. The story is about a wealthy Duke and how his mind set changes when he becomes friends with a soldier that is from a lower section of the country.

The story is about a wealthy aristocrat who happens to befriend a poor soldier. The Duke one hears about a French battle defeat. In order to serve his country, he enrolls himself in the early as a common soldier. The Duke being so wealthy, and obviously his habits and the food that he consumes are rich on quality. He is as rich as he would take his prize racing horse to a healthy restoring famous spa.

When he sets up himself in the army, once he happens to drop a piece of bag trying to pick it up from his bag. The piece of bread drips off onto the dirty sand he would care less about it. But a poor soldier comes rushing and picks up the dirty bread. The poor soldier explains the Duke about how difficult it is to earn food. The Duke immediately shared his food with the poor soldier and eventually, they become friends. One night while everyone were asleep, they were announce that half of the army should be awake and stay alert watching the night as Germans might be present around. The Duke’s name was on the list. But as the Duke was sleeping cozy and tight, The poor soldier decides to take the place of him. When the troop returns, but the poor soldier doesn’t. When the Duke enquires about him, he comes to know that his friend was shot dead.

The story closes when the Duke comes back from the army and when goes out for a stroll with one of his wealthy friends. He happens to see a huge piece of bread rolling and getting stuck in the middle of his toes. He picks the piece of break and wipes the dirt carefully. He places it on a bench. His friend mocks him but he explains to him that it is in the memory of his dear friend who actually took his place of death.

And a third party can come and take benefits without the first two parties being able to do anything with it because they are quarrelling. It teaches us not to be too greedy and have more patience.
