Because of this crucial juncture, the narrative proceeded down a road that, prior to it happening, no one could have foreseen happening at all. It was discovered by Monsieur Madeleine that he was, in fact, the actual thief and that he had been hiding out in disguise the entire time; however, his conscience would not allow him to agree with an innocent man being imprisoned due to a false identification, so he did not share this information with anyone else.
