Traditional farming in Indian context is farming done using embedded knowledge and wisdom gained from the experience over many generations. Mostly passed on by visual and oral instructions. It is generally suited to the local conditions. The gene pool used is home grown and highly acclamatised to the local climate. Said to be more self-sustainable. However, little documentation has been done on the traditional farming methods. As a result, the present educated community is unaware and hence unable to appreciate it. "Modern" farming is one which disregards this embedded knowledge and claims to be superior to the traditional methods. The modern is also more capital intensive and large-scale and uses little of the vast gene pool available in India. We are slowly learning to recognise the local gene pool of plants and animals and the embedded knowledge of our farmers.
