Hy,

The most common form of democracy in the world is 'Parliamentarian Democracy' based on the System in the United Kingdom.
In the Parliamentarian System, people do not directly vote for laws or regulations. Instead people vote for 'representatives' from their local communities who go on the parliament and vote for their interests when it comes to laws and passing of bills. In the UK, these representatives are called MPs or members of parliaments while in the US they are called Senators.
This is the most popular form of democracy since it is practical and makes things quicker and easier. It is not possible and especially for people in the centuries before us to actually come together and vote and discuss each and every bill.
E.g. there are 60 million people in the UK, not all of them can discuss each and everything so instead they elect MP to represent their interests
