The sun is by far the most important heat energy source. This energy can be stored sunshine from millions of years ago in the form of fossil fuels, or of current supply such as biomass and solar thermal.
Today, the heat energy used is more than 80% fossil (coal, gas and oil). Most of the renewable portion is biomass, such as firewood, sawdust or bagasse from sugar production.
A small part is from solar, mostly from solar water heaters. However, such systems can only deliver up to about boiling temperatures, and many industrial processes require medium heat (100–400C) or high temperature (400C to 1200C). The solution is to use mirrors to achieve higher temperatures.
Since heat is the source of about a third of carbon emissions from energy, it is paramount that more effort and attention is paid to this sector, particularly in R&D for higher temperature solar systems and storage.
On the plus side, heat energy is easier to store than electricity, but conversely it is harder to transport, so it needs to be generated at the point of use.
