I was in Montgomery, AL driving around downtown looking for a particular bank… and not finding it. I decided to pull to the curb and ask for help from the first person I saw. Walking towards me was a middle-aged black man in an Air Force uniform. There were no stripes on his uniform, so I realized he was an officer and I was trying to see what was on his collar so that I could address him correctly. As he got to within a few steps of me, my eyes about popped out. There were 4 stars.
There are fewer than 25 4-star generals in the entire US military and they typically don’t walk around in public without several aides fluttering in their orbit. This was like encountering the president or some big celebrity strolling down the sidewalk alone… just not what you’re expecting.
I said, “Excuse me, sir!” and told him that I was looking for a particular bank. He gave me directions, I thanked him, and he started to walk away. Still having a hard time believing an actual 4-star would be out & about alone, I asked, “Sir, are you REALLY a 4-star general?”
Still hard to believe he was just walking around downtown Montgomery by himself, but his answer to my question was great and very telling about why he’d been so successful, and I’m very thankful for having had the brief, but memorable encounter.
