Almost 4.5 million years ago the earth was created from a segment separated from the Sun. That hot and liquid melted segment was solidified and cooled through ages and the earth was created.
During the solidification process the earth's interior was formed in many layers such as crust and mantle etc.
The crust of the uppermost layer of the earth floats or levitates upon the mantle due to a gravitational equilibrium. This phenomenon is also known as isostasy.
