I'm assuming that you are talking about "Cartesian Plane".

This plane consists of an origin-vector or origin-point and two perpendicular lines passing through the origin, called x-axis and y-axis.

All the vectors are represented as points with their x-component as the distance from y-axis and vice versa. (known as co-ordinates in cartesian language)

Distance from x-axis is called y-coordinate (ordinate) and that of y-axis is called x-coordinate(abscissa).

The axes (plural for axis) divide the plane into 4 regions or quadrants:

Quadrants   abscissa  ordinate

I th                +               +

II th               -                +

III th              -                -

IV th             +                -

This is a over-simplified summary of Cartesian Plane parts. I may be wrong with the exact spellings of the terms.
