Cell membrane is the name of outermost covering of animal cell.
Unlike animal cells, plant cell has an extra layer of covering which is composed of non - living cellulose called cell wall

The outermost covering of animal cell is called the cell membrane.

It is a living cell membrane and semi-permeable in nature. It is a double layered structure with embedded lipids. It protects the internal contents of a cell from the outside conditions.

Being semi-permeable it regulates the movement of particles and substances in and out of the cells. It also plays an important function in cell adhesion. It also is responsible for cell signalling which further aids in cell recognition.
