Lonar Crater is the name of the place where lakes have been formed by the impact of a meteorite and it is present in Maharashtra, India.


It is located at Lonar of Buldhana district in Maharashtra, India. It was created due to an impact of a meteor during the time of Pleistocene epoch. It is the only hyper velocity impact crater formed in a basaltic rock, known to exist on Earth. It is saline as well as alkaline in environment. It has a diameter of about 1.2 kilometres. It has a depth of about 137 metres as measured from the crater rim. This saline water lake is present in the centre of the circular depression.
