Let us understand the double displacement reaction by taking an example.

Addition of sodium sulphate solution to barium chloride solution will give a precipitation reaction, which is an example of the double displacement reaction.  The reaction is given below:

$Na_{2}SO_{4}(aq)+BaCl_{2}(aq)$ → $BaSO_{4}(s)+2NaCl(aq)$

As it can be seen, sodium from sodium sulphate is displaced by barium to form barium sulphate. Similarly, barium from barium chloride is displaced by sodium forming sodium chloride.
