The bony roof of buccal cavity is called hard palate. You can even feel its hardness when you touch the internal portion of mouth. It helps in feeding and producing speech espessially in speaking some consonants like /j/ and /k/. The interaction between tongue and hard palate produces speech. It is also involved in mastication(chewing and grinding of food in oral cavity). It is also valuable for diagnosis of some mouth related diseases.
