What is the narrator's experience with the sea waves? Did he really relish the experience?

The narrator's father took him to a beach in California when he was about three or four years old. He hung on to his father as they stood together in the surf. Despite his father being there, he was knocked down and swept over by the waves. he was buried in water and could n't breathe.His father laughed while he was terrified by the overpowering for of the waves. Since then, the narrator developed a fear of water which surfaced and troubled him whenever he tried to overcome his fear.
