oxides of metals are basic in nature and the oxides of non-metals are acidic in nature.

Activity to test the nature of non-metal oxide

Take a small amount of powdered sulphur in a deflagrating spoon and heat it. as soon as it starts heating up or burning , take it to a glass tumbler and cover the tumbler with a lid. remove the spoon after some time and add a small amount of water in it. shake the solution well. test the solution with blue and red litmus . hence, it will change blue litmus to red . therefore, the oxides of non-metals are acidic in nature.

Activity to test the nature of metal oxide

Burn Magnesium ribbon and collect the ash after burning it , which is magnesium oxide ( MgO ) and dissolve it in a small quantity of water and test it with a blue litmus and a red litmus paper. hence, it changes the red litmus paper to blue , it indicates that the solution is basic in nature. therefore, the nature of metal oxides are basic in nature.
