1)take out discriminant

2)analyse the discriminant

if: D>0 then real and unequal roots

D=0 then real and equal roots

D<0 then no real roots it means roots are imaginary

D= b^2-4ac

=2^2-4*1*4

= -12<0

means D<0

therefore no real roots
