Lightning Conductor is a device used to protect buildings from the effect of lightning.A metallic rod, taller than the building, is installed in the walls of the building during its construction. One end of the rod is kept out in the airand the other is buried deep in the ground. The rod provides an easy route for thetransfer of electric charge to the ground.Hence, the lightning conductor protects the building.

The lightning conductor is invented by Benjamin Franklin as a solution to the loss of buildings due to lightning bolt entering through it. The necessity of lightning condutor is all about the scientific mechanism (working) of it. As copper is the best condutor of electricity, most of lightning conductors are made by copper. The upper end of the conductor is expanded and divided into many sharp points. It will turn into the opposite charge of clouds. As the electric charge rapidly conducts through the copper wire, it will flow to the lower end of copper line, where the copper plate is connected. Finally, from there, ithe electrical current flows to the earth.

In the absence of lightning conductor, the lightning current directly flows through the building or skyscraper and might set the building in fire (only 15% chance).
