Antonio's ships are at sea, so he doesn't have too much money now to give to his friend Bassanio. So, Bas samip asks Shylock for money. Antonio guarantees that he will pay back the money to Shylock once his ships return. Shylock gives the money in hope that Antonio's ships don't arrive in proper condition and so that he can take revenge on Antonio for all that he has done to Shylock.
