Desirable agronomic characteristicsare: (i) Tallness and profuse branching are desirable characters for foddercrops. (ii) Dwarfness is desired in cereals, so that less nutrients are consumed by these crops.

⇒Crop improvement is the process of bringing various useful characters together from the different varieties of the different or same plants into one crop variety.

⇒This is done in order to improve the rates of production. It increases the productivity of the crops to provide food and fodder for increasing population of humans and livestock.

⇒The desired agronomic characteristics is one of the various objectives of the crop improvement. They help in achieving higher productivity.

⇒The cereal crops should be dwarf, and with short maturation period, so that they consume less nutrients and are strong enough to withstand the fast blowing winds, while the fodder crops should be tall with intensive and profuse branching.
