Excretion is the removal from the body of waste products which result from normal life processes. Waste products such as carbon dioxide must be removed. If they are allowed to accumulate they cause poisoning which slows down vital chemical reactions.

During various metabolic activities occuring in a variety of body cells, carbohydrates, fats and proteins are broken down. Their end products are carbon dioxide and ammonia. There are other end products which are also not usable in the body. Excess of mineral salts and water also affects cell functioning. Their accumulation in the body is toxic and may lead to death.

Hence, efficient removal of harmful and unwanted substances is essential for the normal functioning of the cells and body.
