First of all, let us understand the definition of what "Nomenclature" is.

Nomenclature is defined as the system of naming objects (inclusive of both plants and animals).

The need for Nomenclature was felt during the time it was thought about being developed becuase of the following reasons-

  • A huge need for scientific names was felt because at that time (and is felt even now a days of course) because a plant has a number of different common names in different parts of the world.
  • The earliest scientific names that were being used back in those days were polynomials, that is, the names used to be composed of several different words at the same time and that made it really difficult to remember them as they used to be extremely long.
