Healthy ecosystems clean our water, purify our air, maintain our soil, regulate the climate, recycle nutrients and provide us with food. They provide raw materials and resources for medicines and other purposes. They are at the foundation of all civilisation and sustain our economies.

Healthy ecosystem are a base of our economic environmental and aesthic good and services. The product of ecosystem processes are termed as ecosystem services. Robert Constanza and his colleagues have put a tag of US 33 trillion dollar on cost of ecosystem services that are twices of gross national product ( US 18 trillion dollar). Among it the soil formation contributes more than 50 %, recreation and nutrient cycling less than 10 % and climate regulation and habitat for wildlife nearly 6%.
