Hi
Here is your answer,
NEWTON'S LAW OF MOTION
Sir Isaac Netwon ( 1664 - 1727 ) made a systematic study of motion and extended the views of Galileo. He arrived at three laws of motion which are called Newtons's law of motion.
NEWTON'S FIRST LAW OF MOTION
This law states that everybody continues in its state of rest or of uniform in a straight line unless it is compelled by some external force to change that state.
The state of rest or uniform linear motion both imply zero acceleration. The first law of motion can therefore be simply expressed as:-
If the net external force on a body is zero, its acceleration is zero. Acceleration can be non-zero, only if there is a net external force on the body. Newton's first law defines force qualitatively.
The Newton's law is categorised in three parts"-
(1) First part:- If a body at rest continues in its state of rest. An external force has to be applied in it to make it move.
Example:- A book on the table will continue to remain there unless we displace it means a book at rest on a horizontal surface of table, it is subjected to two external forces, the force due to gravity( due to its weight w) acting downward and the upward force on the book by the table, the normal force R. Since, the book is observed to be at rest, the net external force, on it must be zero, w = R.
(2) Second Part:- If a body is in motion it continues moving in a straight path with a uniform speed unless an external force is applied.
(3) Third part:- It says that a body moving with a uniform speed in a uniform speed in a straight line cannot change itself its direction of motion.
To change its direction of motion, a force has to be applied normal to this direction of motion.
NEWTON'S FIRST LAW DEFINES THE INERTIA
According to Newton's first law of motion, everybody continues in its state of rest or uniform motion unless a external force acts upon it. This depicts that a body by itself cannot change its state or of uniform motion along a straight line.
Thus, first law defines inertia and so it is tightly inspired by the law of inertia.
Hope it helps you !
